Antel reported progress in fiber optics, 5G deployment and artificial intelligence investments in Uruguay

Antel presented at Expo Prado 2026 a report on connectivity, mobile network and technological infrastructure in Uruguay, in an event led by the head of the agency, Alejandro Paz, together with the Minister of Industry, Fernanda Cardona, according to Caras y Caretas Uruguay.
According to that outlet, the authorities said that Uruguay was the first country in the Americas to universalize access to fiber optics in localities with more than 1,000 inhabitants. They also indicated that by December 2026 the connection of Agraciada, Capilla del Sauce, Gallinal, Grecco, Lagos del Norte and Garibaldi is scheduled, with the goal of achieving universal access in populations of more than 500 inhabitants. By 2027, they added, coverage would extend to all towns with more than 100 households.
In mobile telephony, Caras y Caretas Uruguay reported that Antel installed more than 900 5G radio bases and that that target for the five-year period was met ahead of schedule.
