Peña avoids taking sides in the dispute between Alliana and Cartes within the ANR

The president sought to distance himself from the internal struggle in the Colorado Party and called for unity ahead of the municipal elections. He also said that, according to the information he has, Pedro Alliana remains Honor Colorado's presidential pre-candidate for 2028.

President Santiago Peña referred to the internal tension in the National Republican Association between Vice President Pedro Alliana and the head of the Colorado Party, Horacio Cartes, and avoided aligning himself with either side.

According to ABC Color, the dispute centers on the definition of the future running mate within Honor Colorado: Alliana is demanding the authority to choose his vice-presidential candidate, while Cartes would already have decided on his own who would fill that position.

When asked about that standoff, Peña said he prefers to stand on the side of party unity. In that context, he said that what unites the party today is List 1 and stressed that, with municipal elections two weeks away, the priority must be to support Colorado Party candidates.

According to ABC Color, the president insisted that his role is not to deepen divisions within the ruling coalition. For that reason, he said he is there to “add and multiply,” and not to “subtract or divide.”

Faced with reports about a possible departure of Alliana from Honor Colorado, Peña said he had not seen any statement to that effect and that this is not the information he has. He also said that Alliana remains the presidential pre-candidate for 2028 for that movement.

Peña also recalled that when he was a presidential pre-candidate in 2022 he chose his running mate and highlighted the relationship he built with Alliana. Finally, he said his relationship with Cartes is not broken and expressed appreciation for the Colorado leader.
