The Chamber of Senators of Uruguay will hold a special session this Tuesday to honor former socialist lawmaker Guillermo Chifflet, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, Medios Públicos Uruguay reported.
In remarks to La Escucha, the secretary general of the Socialist Party, Pablo Oribe, said that Chifflet “is part of the heritage of the entire Uruguayan left” and stated that his figure “goes beyond the Socialist Party.”
According to Oribe, the socialist leader made “a superlative contribution” to Uruguayan politics and left behind a record with multiple significant contributions.
Medios Públicos Uruguay also recalled that in 2005 Chifflet resigned his seat over differences with the government of Tabaré Vázquez regarding the authorization of the Uruguayan Army in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
