The visit of Santiago Abascal to Tarragona ended with one person detained and with moments of intense tension in the street, according to ABC España. The president of Vox was in the city as part of his tour of Catalonia when a man approached him and, according to the leader’s complaint, tried to hit him.

Still according to ABC España, the man was subdued by Abascal’s security detail and then handed over to the Mossos d’Esquadra, who proceeded with the arrest. The outlet also noted that the individual was wearing a T-shirt with symbols in support of ETA.

Later, in Barcelona, Abascal referred to the episode before Vox supporters and said that this kind of incident will not stop his party’s activity in Catalonia. He also posted a message on social media thanking people for the support received in Tarragona.

The day was also marked by protests against Vox’s presence. According to Europa Press, about 200 people demonstrated near the event and chanted slogans such as «fora feixistes dels nostres barris». Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Guàrdia Urbana and the Policía Nacional worked at the scene to prevent major incidents.
