Yamandú Orsi received OECD Secretary-General in Uruguay
Mathias Cormann held a meeting with the Uruguayan president as part of an official visit focused on cooperation, innovation and artificial intelligence. Economic and diplomatic authorities also took part in the agenda.
Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi received the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Mathias Cormann, on Monday, as part of an official visit to the country.
According to Presidencia and as reported by Subrayado and La Diaria, the visit aims to deepen exchanges on innovation, productivity, development and artificial intelligence. At the end of the meeting, Orsi said the occasion opens an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation and move forward with a shared agenda.
According to La Diaria, before the meeting with Orsi, Cormann took part at the Executive Tower in an event on cooperation, investment and development alongside the Minister of Economy and Finance, Gabriel Oddone; the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Valeria Csukasi; and the vice president for countries and regional integration at the Inter-American Development Bank, Anabel González.
At that event, still according to La Diaria, Cormann highlighted Uruguay’s institutional strength, economic stability and ability to sustain reforms over time among the country’s strengths. He also noted that the country already participates in ten OECD areas and has adhered to 21 legal instruments of the organization.
Uruguay is not a full member of the OECD, although it participates in different committees and exchange forums. According to La Diaria, Oddone said the government has not made a decision on pursuing full membership and argued that benefits and costs should first be assessed. The minister added that for two days Montevideo will host a Latin American regional cooperation program with a meeting of deputy ministers, within the framework of a co-chairmanship that Uruguay shares with Costa Rica.
Subrayado also reported that a Council of Ministers meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to broaden the reception for Cormann.
