Uruguay Stated Before the BRICS Its Willingness to Deepen Ties Through Celac, the G77 and Mercosur

Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin took part this weekend in New Delhi in the 18th BRICS Summit, on behalf of President Yamandú Orsi and as representative of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), whose presidency is held by Uruguay, according to La Diaria.
During his remarks, he said the international landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, warned that multilateralism is facing pressure and stated that developing countries must not only adapt to change, but also help shape its direction. In that context, he highlighted the role of the BRICS and their contribution to strengthening the voice of the Global South.
Lubetkin also reviewed the presidencies Uruguay currently holds in Celac, the Group of 77 and China, and Mercosur. According to him, those responsibilities open concrete spaces for work with the bloc’s countries, both to strengthen dialogue between India, China and Latin America and the Caribbean and to advance issues linked to the challenges of developing countries, the United Nations and the multilateral system.
He also said that, through Mercosur, Uruguay will seek to promote the updating and expansion of the Preferential Trade Agreement, with the aim of taking advantage of the potential between both regions. The previous Monday, Orsi received the credentials of the first Indian ambassador to Uruguay, Binoy George. In New Delhi, Lubetkin held meetings with officials from Narendra Modi’s government, including Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Piyush Goyal, and the Uruguayan government plans to make an official visit to India in 2027.
In interviews with local media, the minister also spoke about Latin America and the role of the United States in the region. According to La Diaria, he told the ITMNTV channel that there had been strong U.S. pressure, although he noted that today it is mainly economic and not linked to democratic breakdowns.
