Three candidates for the City of Este mayoralty presented their plans to university students and the diocese
Daniel Pereira Mujica, Angélica Mora and Rigoberto Chamorro took part in a meeting organized by the University Pastoral and the Social Pastoral. Bishop Pedro Collar opened the day with a review of the city’s main problems.
The candidates for the City of Este mayoralty, Daniel Pereira Mujica of Yo Creo; Angélica Mora of the Partido de la Juventud; and Rigoberto Chamorro of the ANR, took part in an activity with students organized by the University Pastoral and the Social Pastoral of the Diocese of Ciudad del Este, according to ABC Color.
During the opening, Bishop Pedro Collar, bishop of the diocese, cited insecurity, social exclusion, the lack of opportunities for vulnerable sectors, the situation in settlements, flooding in low-lying areas, people living on the streets and Indigenous communities among the main concerns in the capital of Alto Paraná.
Mujica focused his presentation on the continuity of the municipal administration begun in 2019 under the administration of Miguel Prieto Vallejos. According to ABC Color, he said that at the start of that administration the Municipality of Ciudad del Este had G. 384,000 million in claimed debts and stated that 90% of that long-term liability was reduced. He also noted that previously between 25 and 30 projects were carried out per year and that since 2019 the average rose to 300 annual works.
Among his proposals, he suggested intervening in another 100 plazas with a scheme of mega-plazas, intermediate plazas and joint work with neighborhood committees. He also highlighted the pilot plan for 20 electric buses and said the final installment will be paid next year. In education, he proposed deepening the incorporation of technology in public institutions with initiatives linked to robotics, programming, computing and artificial intelligence. In health, he proposed allocating resources from the Bus Terminal to strengthen municipal medical dispensaries.
Chamorro, for his part, focused on the city’s social needs and questioned why problems such as the lack of housing and the presence of people living on the streets continue despite the resources handled by the municipality. According to ABC Color, he proposed an economic housing program aimed mainly at people living on the streets, families in extreme poverty and residents of low-lying areas. He also explained that he takes as a reference a low-cost housing model he learned about in Brazil.
During his remarks, the ANR candidate also reviewed aspects of his personal history and urged students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by education.
Mora presented a plan based on citizen participation, the recovery of the microcenter and attention to the most vulnerable sectors. She said citizens must have a central role in overseeing municipal administration and noted that one of her commitments is to intervene in the microcenter within the first 100 days of a possible administration.
In environmental and infrastructure matters, she proposed building a wastewater and sewerage treatment plant, as well as a recycling plant to improve waste management and reduce pollution. She also proposed working in coordination with the Gobernación, Itaipú, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, ANDE and other public entities.
At the close of the meeting, the three candidates addressed their messages to young people. Mujica urged them to get involved in the city’s future, Mora said her candidacy seeks to represent sectors that do not have a voice, and Chamorro asked for trust in his proposal and in the value of education.
