Residents of Pozo Hondo sought legislative support to secure basic services

Representatives of the community of Pozo Hondo, in the district of Mariscal Estigarribia, department of Boquerón, held a meeting with Colorado Deputy Francisco Petersen to request support and intercession before state agencies, according to La Nación Paraguay.
According to that outlet, among the most urgent requests they mentioned health, education, security and access to land. On the health front, they proposed the construction of an expanded and equipped Family Health Unit, with the capacity to provide specialties that are not currently available in the area.
In education, they called for the installation of an institution covering the Initial, Basic School and Secondary levels, arguing that the lack of educational options encourages school dropout. They also requested efforts to create job opportunities for trained residents of the community.
Another of the proposals was the titling of land in Pozo Hondo, with the aim of providing legal certainty to families. They also asked for the border crossing at the Puente Internacional Misión La Paz – Pozo Hondo to operate 24 hours a day, in order to boost trade, integration, freight transport and tourism.
According to La Nación Paraguay, residents also called for a Civil Registry office to avoid long-distance travel, in a community located more than 700 kilometers from the capital.
Petersen said, always according to that outlet, that geographic distance has been an obstacle to swift state responses in the area. He said residents must travel more than 200 kilometers to access services such as health or education in Mariscal Estigarribia and stated that, in the case of health care, the nearest point is almost 300 kilometers away.
