Orsi called for letting the courts act in the case of a white-party councilor’s adviser convicted of money laundering
The president was asked, after returning from the UN, about the conviction of an adviser linked to a Partido Nacional councilor. He said the investigation should move forward in depth and avoided commenting on prosecutors and judges.
President Yamandú Orsi referred this Saturday to the case of the adviser to a Montevideo councilor from the Partido Nacional who was convicted of money laundering in a case linked to drug trafficking, according to Subrayado.
At a press conference after returning from an activity at the UN, Orsi stressed that every person must be considered innocent until proven otherwise and said that this type of situation requires special care and thoroughness in the investigation.
The president said that the further the judicial inquiry advances, the better, and stated that the Executive Branch should not intervene. He also said it is not up to the president to comment on the conduct of prosecutors or judges and that there are institutions and specific forums to judge these facts.
According to Subrayado, the adviser was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for money laundering in the case involving the seizure of 250 kilos of pasta base in Montevideo.
Also according to Subrayado, the investigation found that the convicted man used a payment outlet registered in the name of the wife of Jorge Gandini, former senator of the Partido Nacional and current opposition director at the National Port Administration, for his operations. Gandini said at a press conference that he does not know the convicted adviser and said he went to the outlet to pay BPS bills corresponding to two companies. The outlet added that some of those payments were around 500,000 pesos and were made with a large number of low-denomination bills.
