The Liberal infighting adds another chapter over support for Alicia Pucheta

The Authentic Radical Liberal Party is going through a new episode of its internal dispute, this time stemming from the support of some of its lawmakers for Alicia Pucheta’s swearing-in at the Council of the Magistracy representing the Executive Branch, according to HOY Paraguay.
According to that outlet, the president of the PLRA, Hugo Fleitas, backed the statement from the Council of Presidents of Committees of the Central Department, which calls for sanctions against lawmakers for conduct they consider contrary to the party’s position on matters discussed in Congress.
Fleitas said that Liberal lawmakers, in their opposition role, must exercise oversight over the Government. He also rejected the legal filing promoted by lawmakers against party leaders, in which they accuse them of trying to impose an imperative mandate prohibited by the Constitution.
Still according to HOY Paraguay, the Liberal leader said the party is not seeking the loss of immunity of its lawmakers, but rather internal sanctions for misconduct that, in his view, are covered by the law when acting against the organization’s line.
The controversy centers on support for Pucheta, which has been questioned by opposition sectors on the grounds that her appointment by President Santiago Peña was made after the deadline and, therefore, unconstitutionally.
