The internal dispute in Honor Colorado deepens in the campaign closing in Ciudad del Este
The final stretch of the municipal elections in Ciudad del Este once again showed the distance between the sectors of Javier Zacarías Irún and César Landy Torres. The internal fight runs through both the mayoral candidacy and the composition of the Municipal Board.
The municipal campaign in Ciudad del Este entered its final stage with a new sign of the fracture within Honor Colorado. According to Última Hora, Senator Javier Zacarías Irún led an event alongside council candidate Silvio Morel, while the sector that answers to Governor César Landy Torres is focused on Rigoberto Chamorro’s candidacy for the Intendencia.
The division stems from the result of the Colorado primaries on June 7, in which Chamorro, backed by Torres, prevailed over Magno Álvarez, supported by the Zacarías clan. According to Última Hora, the margin was 120 votes: 14,018 to 13,898.
During the event in support of Morel, Zacarías Irún rejected claims about a possible withdrawal from politics and said he will only leave that place when “God and the people” tell him to. He also called on voters to support List 1 and presented Morel as a young figure close to the needs of the population, with a speech focused on demands related to medical care, medicines and public services.
At that same event, the senator also praised Magno Álvarez, whom he described as a top-level leader with a winning profile, although he acknowledged that the primary ended up setting a different course.
Última Hora noted that, after those primaries, Chamorro’s campaign moved forward without the participation of the Zacarías clan. Meanwhile, Morel continued with activities backed by Javier Zacarías Irún and Magno Álvarez.
With just days to go before the vote, the dispute is no longer limited to who leads the ANR municipal candidacy. It also extends to the future composition of the Municipal Board and the influence each structure will retain within the party’s ruling bloc in Ciudad del Este.
