The mayor of Pilo Lil, Andrés Infante, and former municipal chief Eliseo Díaz are at the center of a police and judicial investigation after a fight that took place on Friday at midday during a work meeting in the dining room of a tourist stop in that town in Neuquén.
According to La Nación, the meeting was also attended by the regional coordinator for the southern area, Eliana Rivera, and Raquel Fantini, the current mayor’s partner. According to the complaint filed by Infante, the argument began when Díaz asked to use a Commission for Development truck to transport bales of hay, and the mayor replied that he had to submit a formal note to justify the expense.
Still according to that complaint, the argument escalated with insults, threats, shoves and blows. Infante also stated, in remarks cited by La Nación from the local outlet LM Neuquén, that Díaz displayed a knife during a struggle and threatened to kill him.
The former mayor’s circle offers a different version. Belén Griselda Alfonso, Díaz’s wife, denied to the local outlet that there had been a bladed weapon and said there were shoves and punches, but that the aggression began when Infante grabbed Díaz by the chest, La Nación reported.
Police intervened after the incident. Officers from the Pilo Lil Detachment and Police Station 25 in Junín de los Andes went to the scene, where Infante filed the complaint. Díaz, according to that reconstruction, was intercepted and detained when he was heading to the detachment.
Infante also later reported a threat from one of Díaz’s sons in his office, La Nación reported. The case is now in the hands of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will have to review security cameras and witness testimony to determine how the incident occurred and whether there is criminal liability.
