Honor Colorado governors met with Peña and Alliana after Baruja’s endorsement

The 15 Honor Colorado governors held a meeting on Tuesday night with President Santiago Peña and Vice President Pedro Alliana, amid the internal debate over the vice presidential candidacy for 2028.
According to ABC Color, the meeting took place just hours after ANR leader Horacio Cartes confirmed Juan Carlos Baruja’s pre-candidacy at the Junta de Gobierno.
The meeting was shared on social media by the governor of San Pedro, Freddy D’Ecclesis, who wrote: “The G15 governors, more united than ever (…) reaffirming our commitment to work together for the development of our departments and of all Paraguay”.
According to ABC Color, the decision to back Baruja was poorly received by Colorado Party governors and lawmakers who had been promoting other alternatives to form a ticket with Alliana in 2028, including Raúl Latorre and César “Cesarito” Sosa.
Before that meeting, Alliana had issued a statement in which he said the definition of his eventual running mate would come only after the municipal elections on October 4. “I remain firm in my position that, in tribute to party unity and in light of the challenges of October 4, I will designate the vice presidential candidate once the entire municipal electoral process has concluded”, he said.
In that message, the vice president also called for focusing the agenda on the agreement with the medical sector, dialogue with teachers, the General Budget of the Nation and the elections for mayors and councilors. He also stated: “I am a soldier of the Colorado Party, and its flags will continue to wave in my hands in the face of every challenge that arises, today and tomorrow”.
ABC Color also noted that the internal tension had already had a previous episode, with a meeting between Latorre, lawmakers and Colorado Party governors, including Sosa, at the residence of a Colorado legislator in Asunción.
