Éric Zemmour Confirms He Will Run in France’s Next Presidential Election
The leader of Reconquête announced his candidacy with a speech focused on tightening migration policy. His bid adds another name to the far-right camp, where Marine Le Pen is well placed in the polls.
Éric Zemmour announced that he will be a candidate in France’s next presidential election, according to a statement he made to BFMTV and reported by France 24 and POLITICO Europe. The leader of Reconquête said he will seek the presidency with a platform focused on strengthening measures against immigration.
According to France 24, Zemmour proposed halting immigration and moving forward with the expulsion of foreign nationals convicted of crimes, undocumented migrants and also foreign people who have been unemployed for long periods, even if they are legal residents. The outlet also noted that the leader finished a distant fourth in the 2022 presidential election.
Zemmour’s candidacy adds to that of Marine Le Pen, the figurehead of National Rally, who finished second behind Emmanuel Macron in the last two presidential elections. According to France 24, after the judicial reduction in July of the ban imposed on her over a corruption conviction, Le Pen appears in recent polls as the favorite to win the first round.
POLITICO Europe indicated that with this announcement Zemmour dispelled speculation about a possible withdrawal in favor of his partner, MEP Sarah Knafo. The outlet also recalled that in 2022 he won 7% of the vote in the first round.
France 24 added that a recent poll placed former prime minister Édouard Philippe with a chance of reaching a second round against Le Pen, although only if Gabriel Attal were to drop out of the race. Otherwise, the outlet said, Le Pen’s eventual rival could be Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
