The government of Brazil announced this Thursday an update of around 15% in Bolsa Família benefits. With that change, the minimum amount per family will rise from 600 to 691 reais and the average benefit will increase from 675 to 777 reais, according to G1 Globo.
According to that outlet, the program had not had any adjustments since its relaunch in March 2023. The decision was presented by the economic team as compensation for inflation accumulated since the start of the current government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva through August.
G1 Globo said the adjustment will take effect in October, with payments starting on the 19th of that month. To qualify for the benefit, monthly income per person must be up to 218 reais, in addition to having the Cadastro Único updated for all members of the family group and complying with health and education requirements.
According to the Ministry of Planning, cited by G1 Globo, the cost of the increase will be 5.8 billion reais this year. For 2027 and 2028, the estimated annual impact rises to 22.7 billion reais. With that change, the budget line planned for 2027 would go from 157.1 billion to about 179 billion reais.
In another report, G1 Globo said the Attorney General’s Office of the Union maintained that the inflation adjustment, without expanding the universe of beneficiaries, does not violate electoral restrictions. The same outlet added that allies of Flávio Bolsonaro said they would appeal to the Electoral Court against the measure.
