They enacted the law that designates San Miguel de Tucumán as a symbolic capital every July 9
The measure was published in the Official Gazette and also provides that the main Independence Day ceremonies be held there. According to La Nación, the initiative had already been approved by Congress at the end of August.
The national government enacted Law 27,820, which establishes San Miguel de Tucumán as Argentina’s symbolic capital every July 9 and designates that city as the venue for the main ceremonies for Independence Day.
According to La Nación, the measure was made official this Tuesday in the Official Gazette through Decree 1006/2026. The text provides that the declaration applies to the Tucumán city on each anniversary of the Declaration of Argentine Independence.
The initiative had been approved by Congress on August 26. According to La Nación, the bill was promoted by senators Beatriz Ávila and Sandra Mendoza, and received unanimous backing in the Senate with 67 affirmative votes, after prior consideration in the Chamber of Deputies.
The law also determines that, from now on, the main ceremonies organized by the national government to commemorate July 9 will be held in San Miguel de Tucumán.
During the parliamentary debate, Ávila said it was a vindication of the people of Tucumán and stressed, according to La Nación, the importance of turning into law a provision that until then had been backed by a decree of the Executive Branch.
The newspaper also recalled that last July 9 Javier Milei led a national broadcast from the entrance to the Casa Histórica de Tucumán, on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of Independence.
