Peña will travel to Caracas and then to the United States on a tour with a diplomatic and economic focus
The Paraguayan president will hold a meeting with Delcy Rodríguez to open a dialogue on the relationship between the two countries and will then continue on to New York. According to Última Hora, Juan Carlos Baruja will be part of the delegation.
The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, is scheduled to meet this Saturday in Caracas with Delcy Rodríguez in a bilateral meeting set for 13:00, followed by lunch, at the start of a dialogue process aimed at a possible restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
According to information provided by Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano and published by Última Hora, Peña and Rodríguez have already held prior contacts. The foreign minister clarified that this meeting will not yet mean the formal resumption of diplomatic ties.
According to Ramírez, the issues to be discussed include the Venezuelan institutional process, economic matters and the fight against drug trafficking. He also said the rapprochement was promoted by a group of presidents from the hemisphere and that he himself is maintaining talks with the Venezuelan foreign minister.
Última Hora added that, after the break in relations, the Paraguayan ambassador in Panama, Enrique Jara, is the one who informs the Paraguayan government about developments in Venezuela. The newspaper also noted that the dispute over PDVSA’s debt and the possible purchase of Venezuelan fuel are on the agenda, although the foreign minister gave no further details.
After the meeting in Caracas, Peña will travel to New York. There he will take part in activities linked to Paraguay Day, including events with Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase, where an overview of the Paraguayan economy and investment opportunities will be presented to the private sector. Última Hora indicated that both entities are partners of Paraguay in sovereign bond issuances.
The agenda in the United States also includes bilateral meetings with heads of state, meetings with members of Urupabol and Peña’s participation in the Shield of the Americas, coordinated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as a meeting of the Peace Council and his speech before the United Nations General Assembly.
In parallel, first lady Leticia Ocampos will lead an activity on Paraguayan fashion and ñandutí and will hold a meeting with Melania Trump, always according to Última Hora.
The newspaper also noted that one of the aspects that drew attention on the trip is the presence of Housing Minister Juan Carlos Baruja, amid the internal dispute over the future vice-presidential candidacy for 2028.
