Guatemala will reopen its embassy in Asunción and plans a visit by Bernardo Arévalo in 2026
Paraguay and Guatemala reviewed their bilateral agenda in a new round of political consultations. According to Paraguay’s Foreign Ministry and ABC Color, they will also seek to expand trade, cooperation and cultural exchanges.
Paraguay and Guatemala held the III Meeting of the Political Consultations Mechanism with the aim of updating the bilateral agenda, promoting trade exchange and strengthening cooperation between the two countries, according to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited by ABC Color.
The meeting was led by Guatemala’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mónica Bolaños, and Paraguay’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Víctor Verdún.
According to the official report, Paraguay highlighted the Guatemalan government’s decision to reopen its diplomatic mission in Asunción. It also valued the upcoming official visit by Guatemala’s president, Bernardo Arévalo, scheduled for December 2026, considering that it will help strengthen ties between the two countries.
On the economic front, the delegations noted that there are opportunities to expand and diversify trade, as well as to strengthen ties between the business sectors. The report also mentions the presence of Guatemalan capital in Paraguay and the country’s potential to attract new investments.

ABC Color recalled that in September 2020 Guatemala had ordered the temporary closure of its embassy in Paraguay due to budget adjustments stemming from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. That mission had been inaugurated on November 12, 2019 in Asunción, with the participation of then Guatemalan Foreign Minister Sandra Jovel.
On consular and migration matters, the official report noted that there was an exchange of experiences on migration governance, prevention of human trafficking and the fight against the illicit smuggling of migrants. Paraguay also proposed activating actions within the framework of the memorandum of understanding between the diplomatic academies of both countries.
