Brazil’s government has secured the 54 signatures required in the Senate to file a request allowing a constitutional amendment on the 6×1 work schedule to be voted on in both first and second rounds on the same day.

According to O Globo, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre said the motion is expected to be voted on Wednesday the 14th, when senators will also hold the fifth and final debate session before the first floor vote.

If the request passes, the chamber will be able to proceed to the amendment itself. A constitutional amendment needs support from three-fifths of senators in both rounds, meaning at least 49 votes each time.

O Globo reported that lawmakers from both the government and the opposition believe there are enough votes to approve the change. Government leader Teresa Leitão has said the proposal is being received positively.

The amendment was approved by the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee on September 2. It would change the Constitution to reduce the weekly workload from 44 to 40 hours and require two paid weekly days off, one of them preferably on Sunday, without cutting salaries.

The text also includes a transition period: within two months, the workweek would fall to 42 hours with two paid rest days, and one year later it would be reduced to 40 hours. The measure would not apply to workers with higher education earning more than 2.5 times the INSS ceiling, or more than 21,188 reais per month.

O Globo also reported that Flávio Bolsonaro, who had criticized ending the 6×1 schedule and backed an alternative tied to proportional wage cuts, has now said he will support the proposal. Among opposition figures, members of Republicanos including Damares Alves and Cleitinho have also publicly backed the change.
