The Paraguayan government highlighted the role of supermarkets for the national industry

At the opening of Expo Capasu 2026, Paraguay’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Marco Riquelme, said that supermarket chains serve as a key channel for the national industry, entrepreneurs and mipymes, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

According to that ministry, Riquelme said that 80% of the products sold in supermarkets come from the Paraguayan industry. He also said the sector accounts for about 30% of the country’s mass consumption and described it as a benchmark in terms of formalization.

Still according to the Ministry, the official said that for an entrepreneur, entering a supermarket chain entails requirements, but also the possibility of validating the business, strengthening production and opening up to new markets.

The president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Supermarkets, Gustavo Lezcano, said the activity connects about 1,000 suppliers with consumers and generates employment, investment and opportunities for national producers and industries.

He also said that each new investment by the sector, especially outside Asunción, can activate local production, services and employment chains. Both Riquelme and Lezcano agreed on the need to deepen coordination between the public and private sectors to expand opportunities for national production, advance formalization and confront smuggling.

Expo Capasu 2026 brings together companies and suppliers from different sectors as a space for commercial ties and promotion of Paraguayan production. Also taking part in the event were the vice minister of Commerce and Services, Alberto Sborovsky, and the vice minister of Mipymes, Gustavo Giménez, according to the Ministry.
