The Government of Paraguay Agreed to a Salary Increase for Public-Sector Doctors

The Government of Paraguay and the National Doctors’ Union formalized an agreement that provides for a G. 2,000,000 adjustment per employment relationship for permanent and contracted doctors at the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, according to La Nación Paraguay.
According to that outlet, implementation will be gradual during 2027: G. 500,000 in April, another G. 500,000 in July and G. 1,000,000 in December.
The understanding also includes the regularization of 2,300 contracted doctors, recognition of G. 1,000,000 for each public holiday actually worked by appointed and contracted staff, and an additional G. 1.26 billion allocated to supplies and medicines.
La Nación Paraguay reported that President Santiago Peña took part in the announcement alongside Vice President Pedro Alliana, Health Minister Isaías Fretes, and representatives of Sinamed. In that context, Peña said on social media that the measure seeks to recognize doctors after 14 years and strengthen public health.
According to that newspaper, the Executive Branch plans to make the necessary adjustments in the 2027 General Budget of the Nation to guarantee the resources for the increase. The agreement also contemplates the recovery of the days not worked in August and aims to channel the conflict through dialogue.
Meanwhile, Sinamed’s board of directors called an extraordinary general assembly for this Wednesday, September 16, to address the strike scheduled for September 21 and 22, La Nación Paraguay reported.
